Abstract

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is actually the gold standard non-invasive method to study cortical areas in the human brain in order to recover neural processes in normal human subjects, as well as the treatment of refractory neurological and/or psychiatric conditions. Its mechanism of action is elusive. TMS induces magnetic stimulation of the neuron in the brain cortex, it becomes electrically excited, triggers action potentials and releases neurotransmitter into the postsynaptic neurons. This review presents an overview of the use of TMS in diagnosis, prognosis and post-stroke neurorehabilitation.
