Abstract
Introduction: normal aging produces several neuroanatomic and physiological changes, which could affect cognitive processes; studies have showed the efficacy of cognitive training to improve cognitive functions in older people.
Objective: to observe the changes caused by an attention cognitive training on working memory.
Material and methods: eight healthy, 60 to 70 years old women, from the Universidad de Antioquia retirement group (Prosa) were selected. An attention cognitive training was administered in 20 sessions of one hour each one, three times at week for two months. Working memory was assessed before and after done cognitive training.
Results: a statistical (p < 0,05) and clinically (large size affect > 0,8) significant improvement in working memory tasks: digit, word, pseudo-words and matrix serial retention. Scores on subjetive memory complaint questionnaire were decreased.
Conclusions: attention cognitive training produced a statistically and clinically significant improvement on working memory with increase the processing speed and decreased of memory complaint
