Resumen
Este artículo presenta una revisión extensa de los antecedentes, las definiciones, la patología y las manifestacio- nes clínicas del deterioro cognoscitivo y de su posible evolución hacia la demencia. También analiza las pruebas necesarias para el diagnóstico oportuno y preciso del deterioro cognoscitivo y su diferenciación con la demencia.
Para terminar hace un análisis de las intervenciones terapéuticas farmacológicas y no farmacológicas, tanto en las fases iniciales del deterioro cognoscitivo como de la demencia, resaltando siempre su impacto en la calidad del paciente, su familia y su entorno social.
