Abstract
OBJECTIVE: to review the literature based on the information available in this topic during the las years to integrate. DEVELOPMENT: a review of the literature was made on the frequency, diagnosis, treatment, aetiology and risk factors of depressive disorders in epileptic patients to clarify controversial issues in a clinical relevant topic.
CONCLUSIONS:depressive disorders are the most common type of psychiatric co-morbidity in patients with epilepsy. Despite the high prevalence, remain unrecognized and untreated in a large proportion of patients. Depressive disorders have various clinical presentations. Most antidepressants drugs are safe in patients with epilepsy (Acta Neurol Colomb 2005;21:121-125).
