Abstract

INTRODUCTION: behavioral Assessment System for children (BASC) is a rating scale to measure conduct and personality for children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE. to establish the quantitative behavioral phenotype of 30 nuclear families, from Barranquilla-Colombia, with one ADHD affected proband, using the BASC questionnaires.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: 50 children and adolescent of both genders, belonging to 30 nuclear families, with one ADHD proband, were selected. A structured psychiatric interview, medical and neuropsychological assessment, was administered to complete the ADHD diagnosis. Parents and teachers fulfilled BASC questionnaires about the children and adolescents.

RESULTS: inattentive symptoms would constitute the clinical phenotype, according to parents, showing very significant differences between groups, with huge effect size (1,45); beside, more significant atypical symptoms were found in ADHD group, with large effect size (0,7). Adaptive scale showed that non affected group had better social abilities, with a very large effect size (1,23). The clinical teacher scale reported significant higher scores for affected groups with very large effect size (1,13); symptoms of inattention also produced statistically significant differences with a large effect size (0,98). The quantitative phenotype clearly detected by teachers was academic problems, with a huge effect size (1,4).

CONCLUSION: the BASC questionnaires allow detecting possible quantitative behavioral phenotypes in the studied families.
