Abstract
INTRODUCTION: the increase of the senior citizen population in the world and the proportional widespread of late appearance illnesses, especially different kinds of mental-illnesses (dementia) who demands especial care required carry out epidemiological studies in multiple contexts to give health comities and governmental organizations the needed tools to planify the resources and media attention to the ones who have already
served the country as full time workers.
OBJECTIVES: to describe and quantify the socio-demographical and clinical features of elderly people over 60 years of age in Neiva, and finding out the prevalence index of mental disorders (dementia) in this population and the related factors that might be considered as possible risk ones.
METHODS: it’s about a descriptive quantitative transversal study carried out in two consecutive phases by a multidisciplinary group applying in evermore of them the tests and criteria worldwide used in these cases; the total population of elderly people of Neiva according to the already set projection in the year 2005 was 25.142 and the sample was 643 taken in random testing.
RESULTS: in a significant sample of 60 years of age and more randomly selected according to the socio-economical status we found a global dementia prevalence of 23.6 por ciento and many risk factors related to this being the low study level (more than 80 por ciento), harsh living conditions (over population of the lowest status 92 por ciento) and some illnesses the most frequents (Acta Neurol Colomb 2006;22:243-248).
